🐾Mascot: "Zips"

While the term "Zips" might sound like it's about a speedy mascot, it's actually more about the history and industry of Akron, Ohio. The Akron Zips get their name from "zippers," which were rubber overshoes made by the BF Goodrich Company back in the 1920s and 1930s. These zippers were super popular, and the name stuck as a nod to the city's industrial past. So, even though the mascot itself is a kangaroo named Zippy [ICON_kangaroo], the term "Zips" is all about being fast and efficient, just like those zippers 🚀. It's a unique way for the University of Akron to honor its roots and keep the spirit of innovation alive. And, fun fact, Zippy is one of the few female mascots in college sports 🏆
